HERe AMMAN
Project type
Urban Workshops
Date
2019
Location
Amman, Jordan
HERe Amman workshops are international workshops comitted to understanding the political, social and environmental impact of architectural design decisions, how to manage complex situations and how to design with precision.
The second workshop, HERe II Amman, builds upon considerations explored in the first HERe Amman workshop and the subsequent work by Coventry University students. A series of bespoke maps, city visits and specialist inputs will form the basis of investigations. The workshop will form part of a week-long architectural celebration, including the Tamayouz Awards, presentations by competition winning architects, public presentations and debates.
A city of four million that must negotiate a delicate relationship with resources, migrant populations and a structure dictated by constraints and opportunities of a powerful geographic reality, Amman presents a relevant and challenging space in which to consider the role of the built environment as we enter a new decade. A seemingly continuous city fabric, in part the result of material constraints, creates the image of Amman as a whole. On closer inspection this apparent unity reveals its fault lines and challenges.
Reflecting economic power, the swimming pool map of the city of Amman exposes an interesting imbalance of the scarcest of Amman’s resources.
Juxtaposing the pools map and methodology of city development through Special Economic Zones, the workshop will seek to define and develop the criteria for pools of resource and Special Environmental Zones.
Considering both global and local challenges, students will be asked to design a manifesto for the city. Defined through resource pools and Special Environmental Zones, a series of sites and strategies will be discussed and presented in a public presentation.
